THOMASTON -- It’s the one-and-done time of the girls basketball season.
So if at halftime, your top two players do not have a basket and a
total of only three points between them, it’s enough to get the sweat
glands working overtime.
Unless your team is dominated by seniors who haven’t lost a game all season and carry state title aspirations.
OK,
maybe the crowd was a little on edge in Thomaston on Thursday night.
But that’s as far as it went. The Golden Bears on the floor weren’t
shaking a bit. There was no panic, and the sweat was from hard work.
They
found a few other sources for points; played their trademark,
irritating, all-over-you defense and ground out a win over a pretty
rugged No. 17 Windsor Locks team, 66-50, in a Class S state tournament
game.
It was a tough test for a tough team that is ranked No. 1
and a perfect 22-0. Now it’s on to a battle with No. 9 Portland next
Thursday at a site to be announced. Nobody is claiming that the Bears
can’t be outplayed, but they won’t be out-toughed.
“We did the
same thing tonight that we did every night,” said Thomaston coach Bob
McMahon. “When things didn’t go our way, it didn’t bother us. We moved
on to the next play.”
He was echoed by Brittany Brandt, who made life difficult for Windsor Locks with a smooth 19-point effort.
“We
knew we had to be ready if we are going for a state championship,” said
Brandt. “The refs let us play a bit, and we just had to want it more
and we did.”
The Bears now advance to face #9 Portland on Thurs. March 11th at a site to be determined.
