There were a lot of smiles and hugs. Congratulations from family and
friends wafted through the gym and, of course, there was the customary
cutting down of the nets. All the things champions do on a championship
night were in play. This one was a huge step in a program that went to three straight Class S finals (1992-1994) with the brilliant Amy Matthews, winning the crown in 1993. There may have been a title in the first year of the BL (1960-61), but it hasn't been verified, and it was in the day of rovers, jumpers for uniforms and only certain people being able to shoot. The Bears didn't ignore all of that. They understood this was big, but they want huge. And they feel the goods are there to do it. Just to prove it, they took care of business iin championship style. A loss would have meant a must-win over Terryville tonight, a team the Bears beat by just a basket the last time around. And the night reeked of trouble early when Sciarra Brandt picked up two fouls in the first quarter and Wamogo (16-3), behind Kerri Stolle and Caycee Williams, dissected a normally debilitating defense for a 15-9 first-quarter edge. The the team with big aspirations kicked it into gear. Wamogo didn't score in double figures in any of the final three quarters. In fact, the Warriors barely scored in double figures the rest of the game. Five points in the second quarter, two in the third quarter, five in the fourth quarter. Add 'em up, 12 points. Game over. Wamogo coach Kevin Crowley said the drastic turnaround started on defense, where his team got discouraged and then "didn't dig down and waffled on the offensive end." The Bears looked at their defensive end. "Everyday in practice these kids work to be as stubborn as possible," said Thomaston coach Bob McMahon. They were beyond stubborn here, more a nasty pest as Wamogo shot just 30 percent (12-39) without a scorer in double figures. After trailing 17-12, the Bears took control with a 13-3 run to end the first half keyed by two baskets down low from Keith for a 25-20 lead. It was just the beginning. Brittany and Sciarra Brandt canned 3-pointers in the third period while Wamogo's lone points were a basket from Williams and suddenly it was 35-22. The lead ballooned to 44-22 before Wamogo scored again. McMahon has coached the Thomaston baseball team to a state title, and this will go nicely into his scrapbook alongside that memorable ride. As far as he's concerned, it was history making. "I am chalking it up as the first, I don't see any banner on the wall," said McMahon. "The kids make the program and this group has done everything that was asked of it and finally they get a reward for it." It was a great moment firmly enjoyed by these Bears. But to them, it was also a beginning and they won't let that go. They walked out of their gym, pieces of championship net in tow, major smiles part of the package. But as they soaked in the night, they sought tomorrow with bigger, loftier things on their minds. |
