This course will develop the student's ability to read critically and to communicate clearly in writing and speaking through the study of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and reading.  Five major works from the list below will be read, discussed, and analyzed.  Book reports may be required. One research paper and several short essays will be written.

English 10(2) is a challenging course offered to sophomores of exceptional ability in Language Arts. Designed to challenge and improve the student's skills in reading and responding to literature, this course involves rigorous reading and written work. Students will regularly analyze literature according to genre features, literary devices, and author's craft. In addition, students will begin responding to literary criticism in coordination with covered texts. Students will consider and respond to thematic concepts in literature such as the abuse of power, standing up for one's own beliefs, and individuals within/vs. society. Students will regularly produce both formal and informal written responses to a variety of texts. Students will have many opportunities for creative writing and will also continue to strengthen vocabulary and grammar skills throughout the course.
